dress it up or dress it down!

4.3.13

happy monday! and a kick off to hopefully a great week!
so i've had an idea and kind of wanted to try something new for a while. i get a lot of questions about how i go about dressing up or dressing down a specific piece so i've been wanting to start a new mini series and each week showcasing one particular item that i dress up as well as dress down! today we are looking at high wasted pencil skirts! this is by far a favorite trend and now that it's getting slightly warmer i am excited for summer and all kinds of skirts! the tricky thing is being able to wear a pencil skirt and dress it so it doesn't always look like you are heading to the office or to church.
this lovely skirt is an early birthday present from the hubs and he did a great job (possibly because i had already had it picked out and on hold, but either way, he takes hints verrry well!) the thing i was most excited to do was pair it with all sorts of fun tees and make it fun for summer, but also have a killer dressy skirt when needed! so here's how to go from
   day <--------------------------- to ---------------------------> night

when looking to dress this skirt down, pairing it with a rocker tee, chunky jewelry, and an everyday slouchy bag brings down the dressiness of the skirt, but in a good way! also paired with chunky heels or even flats will keep it less "office style" and more "out for the day". big rings, stacked bracelets/watch, and studs on my vest may give it a little "rocker" look, but you can pull off the same idea by adding a few of these key pieces.

beatles tee: amazon, leather vest: c/o windsor, skirt: nordstrom, shoes: charlotte russe (similar), bag: urban outfitters
necklace: c/o windsor, wrap watch: c/o feral watches, skull bracelet: brandy melville, skully bracelet: c/o stylelately
----------------------------------
now, when dressing up the skirt, it usually tends to be a bit easier, because skirts are naturally a dressier look. i paired mine with a button down blouse, but kept it fun with the print and even threw in my leopard heels to keep it interesting with pattern play. heels will keep your legs from looking cut off and creating a more elongated look, especially when you have a longer skirt like this one. keep accessories simple and a slicked back pony or a cute bun always keeps your look classy! a simple clutch and red lips don't hurt to add a bit of of class and sass to the look!

blouse: necessary clothing (wider stripes), skirt: nordstrom, shoes: chinese laundry (similar), clutch: steve madden
watch: c/o feral watches, infinity necklace: c/o stylately, lipstick: mac's ruby woo

well i hope you enjoyed this weeks version of "dress it up or dress it down" and if you have any quetstions or would like to see a particular piece dressed up or down please feel free to comment or email anytime!!
